Microsoft already intends to introduce a widget panel, similar to the Windows 11 panel, cloud file access and a modern app store in Windows 8. This was revealed by former Windows engineer Stefan Sinofsky, who shared a video with the proposed concepts in the past.
It was possible to show this material to Microsoft managers at the time when plans were made for the next version of the operating system. The snippet focuses on the people involved in the project, but the ending reveals some screenshots with initial ideas for Windows 8, including gadgets and internet connectivity.
Sinofsky demonstrated some of the concepts that exist today, such as accessing files from anywhere through cloud storage, Do Not Disturb mode, automatic network switching, Windows Phone connectivity and other features. All of these flags have been modified in some way to fit the Microsoft system.
Windows Phone has given way to Android and cloud storage is based on OneDrive. Do Not Disturb mode has been sold as one of the biggest innovations in Windows, and it has been improved in the current version.
Initial design
The video shows a tab called What’s New, probably related to online news and software updates, and another called Marketplace, possibly built into the Windows Store – pretty weak at the time. From the traditional point of view, it is possible to note a completely transparent taskbar, which has never appeared in later versions.
Another interesting concept was the ability to share files by dragging them to the widgets sidebar, making it easy to post to social networks using Twitter. It seems that there is already support for different wallpapers for those using multiple monitors and easy arrangement of screens.
The sidebar brought various contents related to installed applications and news of interest to the user. You can see the Internet Explorer shortcut, ESPN basketball scores, keyword searches on E-bay, and the current weather. This is similar to the concept implemented in Windows 10, which evolved in Windows 11.
Toolbar
In the modern system, there is still no support for third-party tools, so it is possible that Microsoft has not yet made plans for 2010. This would be an indication that apps like Facebook, Reddit, and Amazon could soon offer useful desktop shortcuts.? There is no way to find out.
It’s interesting to see how the 2010 system plans actually had advanced concepts, which were introduced only 5 or 11 years later. The truth is that software engineers often come up with ideas ahead of their time. Many are rejected due to lack of technical capabilities, others because of difficulty in implementation, but none are 100% ignored if they are good.
Windows 11 appears to have taken advantage of some of the most revolutionary software to offer different software than its predecessor, although it’s still under construction — at the end of the month, a major update has arrived to improve the experience. But there are still a bunch of bugs that need to be fixed, like the one that affected printers last week and prevented the release of version 22H2.
