The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl after they each beat the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49s on Sunday.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs secured a trip to their third Super Bowl in four years, evading a stout Bengals 23-20.
The Kansas City quarterback had a stellar showing, finishing with two touchdowns and 326 yards, while his opposite number, Joe Burrow, threw one touchdown and two interceptions. Two early field goals gave the home team an early lead, but the Bengals were able to keep up with a field goal of their own.
The Chiefs again threatened to fold when Mahomes found Travis Kelsey in the end zone, but another field goal from Bengals kicker Evan McPherson ensured Cincinnati was trailing by only seven at halftime. They then tied it up early in the third courtesy of a 27-yard touchdown run to Tee Higgins.
Kansas City responded in kind, as Marques Valdez-Scantling found the end zone to make it 20-13 going into the fourth quarter. A two-yard touchdown run by Bengals running back Samaji Perrine tied the game again, but Harrison Butker’s third field goal of the night with just three seconds left sealed the Chiefs’ thrilling victory.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles had a much easier day at the office, outscoring the 49ers 31-7. San Francisco was helpless against the Philadelphia running game, with four touchdowns by the Eagles on the ground. This is Philadelphia’s first trip to the Super Bowl since 2018.
