Engineer Chemie Patenoch was appointed by the new British Prime Minister on Tuesday (25). Rishi Sunak, to lead the Ministry of Equality and Women. Of Nigerian descent and a mother of three, she is known in British politics for championing conservative agendas in the UK.
At 42, Kemi is a spokesman for right-wing values and the Conservative Party’s efforts to win over younger voters. He opposes the rhetoric promoted by the left and has been called “Labour’s worst nightmare” by the UK press.
In his first speech to Parliament under Sunak this week, he responded to accusations that he was a convert for calling a transgender man a man: “The Equality Act is a shield, not a sword. It is meant to protect people of all characteristics, whether young, old or male. right, whether female, black or white, gay or straight”, and concludes that it enacts “a strategy of compassionate equality”.
In 2021, one of his stances on black activism created controversy and caused waves on the internet: “The ideology that sees my blackness as victim and whiteness as oppressor (…) violates the law”.
During Black Lives Matter demonstrations, he called the political mobilization “anti-capitalist” and said he witnessed a black police officer being cursed by protesters. Nevertheless, he emphasized that “of course, black lives matter.”
This is Kemi’s second tenure as the Ministry of Equity. During Boris Johnson’s tenure, he held the same post between February 2020 and July 2022.
The Conservative was elected to a seat in Parliament in 2017 at the age of 37, but his political career began a few years earlier. In 2015, he was elected vice-president by Saffron Walton in the south of the country, eliminating prominent names supported by the party.
Kemmy ran to replace Boris Johnson for the leadership of the Conservative Party, but he did not get the support he needed to stay in the race. However, some political analysts consider him a “rising star” among the UK’s conservatives.
