To remember the good times of traffic jams on national roads, a French association intends to recreate a traffic jam that lasts several kilometres on national roads in Brittany today.
Some people miss the famous Nationale 7, which brings together collectible vehicles every year.
But the famous road linking Paris to the Cote d’Azur wasn’t the only one filled with cars on holiday before the advent of motorways.
The Association of Vintage Vehicles of Île-et-Vilaine (APEV) also wants to recreate the atmosphere of vehicles that pile up on the roads to reach holiday destinations. What has been a nightmare for many French people all year round, traffic jams will this time be voluntarily recreated by the association’s members and all the owners of vintage vehicles invited to a small party, this Sunday, near Plouguenoc.
In the morning, a vehicle tour of about 40 kilometers will be organized, lasting about two hours. Departure will be at 10 am. Then, at 2:15 pm, vehicles will gather at the castle to start the traffic jams on the streets of Ploginok, starting at 2:30 pm.
Thus, in the early afternoon, dozens of vehicles will fill the N137 for several kilometres. Certain roads will be closed for the occasion, and the organizers are still planning for “reasonable” traffic congestion, with calm traffic.
Indeed, older vehicles do not like to remain idle for long periods of time or in extreme temperatures, although this should not happen in this corner of France that is rarely affected by heat waves. “The event brings together the maximum number of vehicles in the same dedicated space closed to public traffic, while allowing the circulation of fluids for the participants and avoiding real damage,” explained a person in charge of the French publication “Ouest de France”.
