Volkswagen Autoeuropa has announced that during October the latest MPV, the Volkswagen Sharan, version 1.4L TSI Active, will leave the manufacturer’s production line. MPVs have been produced for over 30 years at this facility.
The Palmela plant began production of MPVs in May 1995, and by 2022, if we combine the three models produced, Sharan, Seat Alhambra and Ford Galaxy (the latter was produced until 2000), more than two million units were built, of which more than one million Sharan.
“It was the model that laid the foundations of our success story. The following models – Scirocco and Eos – helped boost the plant, but the MPV has always been the car that has set us apart. That definition is now in the hands of the T-Roc, an SUV that has been a huge commercial success,” he said. Thomas Hegel-Günther, Managing Director of Volkswagen Auto Europa.
The discontinuation of MPV production will make way for increased production of the T-Roc, which was the best-selling model in Europe in July and August. In the first seven months of the year, the manufacturer sold 105939 units of this model.
