In its latest status report on the volcano, the institute reported 54 signs of “emission tremor” due to repeated exhalations of gases and ash.
Although the volcano’s activity appears to have slowed compared to previous days, the Geological Institute reported that there was no change in its direction.
On Friday and Saturday, the Sangay River produced a column of gases and ash that, due to the influence of winds, turned northwest, affecting some agricultural areas in the provinces of Chimborazo and Bolivar, as well as on the coast of the Guayas and Los rivers.
The institute explained in the report that no waterfall ash events were observed today, although satellite images reveal a cloud of volcanic gases and ash heading west and northwest of the mountain.
Gas and ash emissions detected by satellites rose to altitudes between 900 and 2,100 meters above the crater level.
In addition, technological monitoring systems in the mountains have recorded eight thermal anomalies in the past 24 hours.
Sangay, the southernmost volcano in Ecuador, with a height of 5,230 meters that has been active since 2019, is located in a mountainous point at the entrance to the Amazon and is one of 50 volcanoes in the country, most of them on the so-called Avenida dos Fulcos, in the Andes region.
