Archbishop Ximenes Belo was never the subject of formal investigations by Timorese justice into the sexual assaults of minors, despite suspicions against the 96 Nobel Peace Prize from the 1990s and the following decade. No investigation was ever opened, and there were no official complaints about abuse of minors. But the topic has been talked about repeatedly. However, there is nothing very specific that we can move forward with some kind of discretion,” told Expresso a Portuguese judicial source who was in East Timor during the first phase of the country’s independence. Another senior justice official confirms this piece of information: “Doubts yes, concrete Nothing against the bishop.”
At the time, the Timorese judicial system was under construction, which would make further investigations difficult. However, sources interviewed by Expresso state that UN police have full powers and independence to handle a case of this magnitude. “There were also Portuguese police, prosecutors and judges in the territory who, having received some consolidated information, could have acted.”
