Viktor Orban will be the Prime Minister of Hungary for another four years. The national leader of the Fidesz party won the legislative elections on Sunday, at a time when he won Count more than 75% of the votes. It will hold at least 135 of the 199 parliamentary seats, more than double the six-party alliance that opposed it.which adds up to 57 seats.
“Everyone sees that conservative and Christian politics have won,” Orbán said, celebrating his party’s “massive victory.” “Victor,” party leaders, hardliners and supporters chanted. “We achieved such a great victory that you can see from the moon and you can definitely see it from Brussels,” he fired at the European Union.Hungary is a member. He is 58 years old, and spends 12 years as the head of government.
Orban is a frequent critic of European institutions and values, and was in agreement with 26 others in punishing Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. The proximity to President Vladimir Putin and the reluctance to directly condemn him do not appear to have cost him votes.
Peter Markie Zay, the leader of the United Opposition Alliance for Hungary, which mobilized political forces from the left to the far right, was not a favorite with voters in his region. The initial result suggests a much larger margin than pollsters had predicted: although they had predicted Orbán’s victory several days earlier, they indicated a closer conflict.
The prime minister has received criticism from the European Union in recent years for attacks on the rule of law. Justice, education, and social communication are the areas where the executive branch has weakened its independence. Other targets are ethnic minorities or the LGBTQ+ community. In power since 2010, Orbán previously ruled between 1998 and 2002. Sunday’s elections open the door for him to remain in power until 2026.
