according to Vatican News, the Peruvian mummies were donated to the Anima Mundi Ethnological Museum at the time of its creation, in 1925. Now, more than 10 years into the journey, they will be brought back home. The ceremony that marked this moment was held on Monday 17 October at the Vatican Museums.
In 2010, Father Nicola Mapelli, director of the Anima Mundi Museum, along with the then director of the Vatican Museums, Antonio Bolucci, began a project to return the mummies in the museum, in a policy aimed at not being human remains. They are considered as artwork or collector’s items.
Therefore, the efforts of museums to return the mummies to their countries of origin is also a way to show the importance given to the cause of respect for the identity of each people and culture, which was also greatly promoted by Pope Francis.
As for the mummies, their exact traces are unknown. Therefore, in-depth investigations will be carried out after your return to Peru, in order to determine the period of origin. It is known, however, that it was found at an altitude of three thousand meters in the Peruvian Andes along the course of the Ucayali River, a tributary of the Amazon River.
