Ursula von der Leyen and Rishi Sunak together to iron out the details of post-Brexit
Brussels and London want to settle the last details on the issue of Ireland, which is the most important point in the post-Brexit negotiations. Rishi Sunak should seize the opportunity for rapprochement with the European bloc.
On Monday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, will meet in the United Kingdom, to settle some details of the post-Brexit agreement, specifically the situation in Ireland from the north.
The two agreed to “continue to work together face to face to find practical and joint solutions to the complex challenges surrounding the Ireland and Northern Ireland Protocol,” according to a statement sent on Sunday afternoon.
The situation in Ireland was one of the decisive points in the negotiations between London and Brussels, with many advances and setbacks between the two parties, as Ireland belongs to the European Union and Northern Ireland to the United Kingdom, but there are agreements between them that contradict the assumptions of Britain’s exit from the European Union.
On Saturday, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar confirmed that negotiations between the UK and the EU on post-Brexit customs controls in Northern Ireland are nearing completion. “It is true that the agreement is not concluded yet, but I think we are getting close to it,” he noted in remarks to RTE.
Two weeks ago, the British media reported that Sunak wanted to take advantage of this opportunity – from the Irish agreement – to put proposals on the table that would allow for the deepening of relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
A recently published analysis estimates that Brexit costs the UK economy £100 billion a year (€112.74 billion at current exchange rates). The figures, which reflect investment losses or employment difficulties, show that the UK economy will be 4% smaller than it would be if the country remained a member of the European Union.
However, Sunak’s rapprochement mission cannot be seen as an acknowledgment of the failure of Brexit, as indicated by, at the time, sources contacted.
