That date, Monday, will be a public holiday across the United Kingdom, as the new King Charles III authorized this Saturday in one of his first decrees.
A number of world leaders and representatives of royal houses, including US President Joe Biden, are expected to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, who died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland last Thursday.
The funeral will be preceded by a four-day vigil at Westminster Hall, the oldest building in the Parliament complex, where members of the public can pay their respects.
Elizabeth II’s body is currently in the ballroom at Balmoral Castle, from where it will be taken to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on Sunday, according to a statement outlining the schedule for the next few days.
There, he will lie in the throne room until Monday afternoon, when he will be taken in procession to St Egidio’s Cathedral in the Scottish capital.
A real family
King Charles III and members of the royal family will take part in a procession and a service to receive the coffin into the cathedral, which will be a wake to bid farewell to the Scottish sovereign.
A day later, on Tuesday, the 13th, the coffin will fly from Edinburgh Airport on a Royal Air Force flight to Northolt, west of London, accompanied by Princess Anne, daughter of Elizabeth II, and from there by car to Buckingham Palace.
On Wednesday afternoon, the remains will be taken by bus from the Royal Artillery to Westminster, where a vigil will begin until a state funeral on the 19th.
Once at Westminster Hall, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate of the Church of England, will conduct a service which will be attended by the King and his family.
On the morning of September 19, the coffin will be carried in procession a few meters between Westminster Hall and the Abbey for the funeral. You will then be escorted to Wellington Arch and from there outside London to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, along a route known as the “Long Walk”, where the funeral service will take place.
