A scientific collaboration between the UK and Brazil to measure carbon dioxide in the Amazon rainforest will receive more funding. The research station, called Amazonface, is 80 km from Manas, the capital of the Amazonas, where the observation towers are located.
When visiting the site, the Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom, James Wise, announced another investment: the equivalent of R$ 12 million for the project, which wants to understand how CO2, carbon dioxide, increases. Affects the atmosphere, the forest and the biodiversity that lives in it.
The announced amount complements the investments the UK has already made in the program from 2021. On the Brazilian side, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will contribute more than R$ 30 million, Minister of the Ministry Luciana Santos announced during the visit.
AmazonFACE is a major scientific collaboration project between the two countries. The experiment uses FACE technology, which exposes a patch of mature forest in the Amazon to CO2 concentrations that are 50% higher than those normally found in the atmosphere.
6 rings are installed in the experiment. In each, there are 16 circular towers, which are connected to a CO2 tank. A system of sensors controls the release of air with added carbon dioxide and monitors how the forest and its ecosystem react to this release.
