The UN Special Committee on Decolonization has repeatedly asked Britain to negotiate with Argentina.
China International Radio – “For a long time, this is the first time that the European Union (EU) is talking about the issue of the Malvinas Islands,” said an Argentine official, while participating in the 3rd summit of EU leaders and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Brussels. The summit declaration covers the question of the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands, indicating that both sides agree to resolve the dispute peacefully through negotiations on the basis of respect for international law.
This is the first time that two regional bodies in Europe and Latin America have addressed the matter in a memorandum. The European Union declared that it respects CELAC’s historic position on the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands, reiterating its commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. The Argentine side hailed the declaration, calling it a “triumph of diplomacy”.
The change in the EU’s approach to the Falklands issue is not surprising. On the one hand, it is the historical legacy of colonialism. In 1965, the UN General Assembly resolved, in Resolution n.2065 °, to abolish colonialism in the region, while asking the United Kingdom and Argentina for a negotiated settlement.
The UN Special Committee on Decolonization has repeatedly asked Britain to negotiate with Argentina. Latin American countries, China and other developing countries have repeatedly expressed support for Argentina over its sovereignty claims in the Falkland Islands. In this context, current EU statements demonstrate respect for the international community and protection of UN resolutions.
On the other hand, the European Union has its practical considerations. The last EU-Celac summit was held eight years ago, so the current edition is described by the European side as an opportunity to renew bilateral relations. Affected by the Ukraine crisis, the EU faces energy shortages and urgently needs to overhaul its energy security architecture. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with Latin America in mineral resources and renewable energy. Given the situation, statements on certain historical issues are very important.
Proceed after the suggestions
In recent years, the UK has strengthened its occupation of the Falkland Islands, notably through frequent military exercises. However, a permanent occupation of the British Isles was obviously impossible. The United Nations has already determined that the Malvinas are within Argentina’s territorial waters and on June 20 this year, held an open meeting to discuss the issue.
In the face of UN resolutions and strong appeals from the international community, the United Kingdom must quickly wake up from its colonial nightmare and resume dialogue and negotiations for the return of the Malvinas Islands to Argentina.
