The discovery could help develop therapies to prevent memory loss and aging
UK scientists have shown that it can alter memory loss and brain plasticity. The study, conducted in mice, analyzed whether manipulating a mixture of chondroitin sulfate could alter neuroplasticity and memory loss.
Chondroitin sulfate is present in perineuronal networks (structures involving neurons in the brain whose function is to regulate the level of plasticity).
For the experiment, a team from the United Kingdom compared 20-month-old rats (considered the oldest) to six-month-old animals. One of the tests to see if the mouse recognizes an antiquity.
In today’s issue (29), Professor Mayana Chatz, Director of the Center for the Study of Human Genetics and Stem Cells (CEGH-CEL) at USB, gives details of the study published in the journal. Molecular Psychiatry.
