The European Commission (EC) today launched a series of violations against the United Kingdom for failing to comply with significant parts of the Code relating to Ireland / Northern Ireland. Despite repeated calls to implement the protocol, the UK government has not done so. This is a clear violation of international law. The purpose of these violations is to restore compliance with the Code in many key areas where the UK has not used it properly – ultimately with the aim of protecting the health and safety of EU citizens. At the same time, the Commission today provides further details on possible solutions proposed in October 2021 to facilitate the movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Status documents released today illustrate how the movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland is significantly facilitated. The Commission urges the UK Government to actively and creatively engage in the proposed solutions. As usual, the Commission will continue to work in close collaboration and dialogue with the European Parliament and the Council. More info Press release Is on Questions and Answers.
