The plight of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not confirmed on Election Day this Thursday. On a day of elections in three constituencies to replace delegates who defected from the Conservative Party, the latter could not lose all.
In front of just 495 votes, the Tori Steve Tugwell was elected to the House of Commons by Boris Johnson’s Uxbridge and Ruislip South (London fringe) constituency from 2015 to this year. The former head of government resigned from parliament after an inquiry concluded that he had deceived representatives by testifying about illegal parties at his official residence during the pandemic.
Downing Street No. Sunak, the current tenant of 10, congratulated Tugwell on the social network Twitter, clinging to the only reason for consolation earlier in the day. “Congratulations Steve, well deserved result after a great campaign.” This Friday morning, he met his new partner, joking: “It’s usually bad news when they wake me up at 3am. So this is a welcome change”:
