Twitch is adding more and more features to protect your live stream from harassment, hateful attacks, and other unwanted situations. Last Tuesday (30), the platform launched a new tool to detect suspicious users. This should prevent people blocked by moderators from interacting with the live broadcast again using a different account.
In September this year, Twitch implemented phone verification of chats with the aim of reducing instances of hate raids on the platform. With this feature, broadcasters can ask people to register and verify a cell phone on their account to send messages in a chat.
This verification tool made the process of identifying and blocking toxic people easier, but it wasn’t enough to stop all kinds of attacks. Even after receiving the penalty, users can still create another account and re-enter the live broadcast to continue the harassment.
User discovery uses machine learning
With the new discovery of suspicious users, Twitch has begun applying machine learning to find potentially suspicious accounts that would circumvent the ban. The idea is to report potential perpetrators before they engage in illegal activities again.
The system will categorize users into two levels: potential or suspected. Users tagged as potential suspects will be able to join the chat, but messages will only be visible to the channel owner and moderators. Thus, you can choose to keep the restriction, continue monitoring the person, or block them from the channel altogether.
Users who have been identified as possible suspects will be able to send messages in the chat as normal, but the account will be flagged so that the admin and moderators can closely monitor the user.
Both detecting suspicious users and checking the phone for conversations can be freely enabled or disabled in the channel settings. There is still no way to block people automatically, but these features can make the task easier.
