First misconception: Liberal democracy does not care about the people. In a short video circulating on social media, Italy’s new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, Talks about the importance of family, God and nation. In this text, Meloni opines that if people are removed from the concept of family, God, and country, they will be enslaved to the coldness of barbaric capitalism. For Meloni, each of us is an isolated being within ourselves that protects us from the consumerism of the modern world.
Giorgia Meloni is not the fascist they claim (unlike Orbán’s support of economic sanctions on Russia) and represents a moderate in relation to Salvini’s extremism. In any case, the said speech is interesting for two reasons: first, because of the media success, as if it was somehow original in what it said and was not limited to repeating the old complaints that are usually made when seeing a change. Second, because extremism (Fascism, Nazism, and Communism) amplified the human being, they saw the individual as a cog in a gear for a greater cause. It is neither liberal democracy nor free competition. It is not the opening of markets or globalization. Fearful of economic growth, scientific and social progress, those who rebelled against lifestyle changes, against the possibility that each person could decide what to do with their life.
