MThousands of climate activists blocked a motorway in The Hague, Netherlands, on Saturday. The goal, according to the Associated Press, was to protest million-dollar government subsidies for industries that use oil, coal and gas. However, the authorities eventually dispersed the activists, resorting to water cannons.
Activists from different climate groups sat on the highway, heading towards the temporary headquarters of the lower house of the Dutch parliament, and threatened to stay there until government support ended.
“The issue is much broader than any one of us. This concerns the entire world,” activist Yolanda de Jager said, quoted by the Associated Press.
Activists carried with them posters that read, “Fossil fuel subsidies are not cool,” or warned of global warming and the extreme temperatures recorded this summer.
After a few hours, the authorities finally dispersed the demonstrators, resorting to water cannons. But a new protest is scheduled for Sunday.
