“Withdrawing in the second year of the course meant losing the Ph.D. and having to reinstate the integrity of the scholarship,” the researcher recalls. “I spent sleepless nights thinking about how many euros I would have to pay. My hair started falling out. My mother used to say I was crazy for dropping a suitcase abroad.”
Bella Gonçalves ended up giving up her PhD in Coimbra and moving back to Brazil.
Boaventura Sousa Santos as well as researcher Bruno Sena Martins were suspended Thursday from all positions at the Center for Social Studies until the results of the investigation are known.
The Argentine scholar, Moira Millan, has also accused Boaventura Souza Santos of sexual harassment, after three authors wrote a chapter in the book “Más Conduta Sexual na Academia”, in which they aroused suspicion at the University of Coimbra.
