The Spanish Civil Guard warned: there is a scam that can make you lose a lot of money, if you “fall” repeatedly. The procedure is simple and involves 2€ coins for “pairs” whose value is much less.

According to the Spanish police forces, in a post on the social network ‘Twitter’, there are people trying to exchange the Turkish lira for a 2 euro coin – both are very similar but there is an issue that separates them: value. Thus, according to the Guardia Civil, Turkish coins are worth 32 cents, although, as the Spanish newspaper “ABC” warns, they are worth … 5 cents.
In the ‘twett’ of the Guardia Civil it is possible to see the differences: in the Turkish lira there is one on the cross, a moon with a star and the inscription ‘Yeni Türk Lirasi’: on the obverse you can see the portrait of Kemal Atatürk, the first president of the Turkish Republic, next to the inscription ‘Turkey is my Republic’ .
The scam is not new, as Turkish coins have been circulating in Spain since at least 2005 – it can also happen with other international currencies, such as the bolivar, the Jamaican dollar or the Polish zloty.
There have been people who indicated that they realized they were the victims of the scam when they used the coins in the vending machine.
