From the second quarter of 2024, some Volkswagen vehicles will integrate the ChatGPT AI system.
Volkswagen will start integrating ChatGPT into some models from the second quarter of this year – and will be the first manufacturer to do so.
This was announced by the German brand itself and will showcase this new feature at this year's edition of CES (Consumer Electronics Show), which opens its doors on Tuesday, January 9.
Before you ask, ChatGPT won't replace Volkswagen's multimedia system. It will actually be integrated into the brand's IDA voice assistant. Remember, Mercedes-Benz has already integrated ChatGPT into its MBUX system, although it is being done on a trial basis in the USA at the moment.
what's he doing?
If the IDA voice assistant can be used to control the infotainment and navigation system, air conditioning or simply to answer general knowledge questions, ChatGPT will be able to provide additional information. Whether it's clarifying questions through an interaction that is as natural and intuitive as possible – and always constantly evolving – or receiving information about the car.
In the future, Volkswagen customers will have continuous access to an ever-growing AI database (on IDA-compatible models) that will be able to “read” the content they are asked to read aloud while driving. .
How it works?
To activate the system, simply say “Hello IDA,” or simply press the button on the steering wheel controls.
The system will prioritize basic car functions, such as climate control or searching for a destination in the navigation system. If the Volkswagen system is unable to respond to the question or request posed by the driver, it directly hands over the “task” to ChatGPT.
According to Volkswagen, it will not be necessary to create any ChatGPT account or install any application. Everything will be integrated natively into the voice assistant of compatible models, thanks to the Cerence Chat Pro system, developed by Cerence Inc., one of the Wolfsburg brand's many technology partners.
As for security, Volkswagen ensures that ChatGPT integration does not require access to vehicle information and that the questions you ask the system (and the answers that follow, of course) will be deleted immediately.
What models will receive ChatGPT?
Currently, in the initial phase, ChatGPT will be available on ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 that it ID.7As well as in the new Tiguan, Passat and Golf.
The latter will also appear at CES 2024, justified by the update that it is preparing to receive, albeit covered in heavy camouflage.
