all about Apps
Instagram’s Twitter clone thread has had a very productive week since its launch, crossing the 30 million user mark in its first 24 hours and reaching over 100 million signups in just five days.
Another completely broken app has been inadvertently thrown into the spotlight due to Instagram’s attempt to cash in on Twitter’s chaos.

Threads but not Instagram
- Thread, an alternative to Slack that launched in 2019, has seen a significant increase in traffic to its website in the days since its namesake launch.
- This is mainly due to the fact that Slack alternative has the field Thread.comwhile the new Instagram social network uses the less popular address Threads.
- It also led to the business app having some fun on the Instagram account.
Success is driven by confusion
- This confusion led to a significant increase in downloads in Threads (the alternative to Slack) in the week immediately following the launch of the Instagram app.
- Between July 6th and July 12th, Data.ai data released by TechCrunch indicates that Thread had more than 880,000 downloads globally on iOS alone, up from “few downloads” prior to that point.
- It was also the 52nd most downloaded app worldwide and the 3rd in the ‘Business’ category.
- Interestingly, the top three markets with the best App Store rankings were Germany, Spain and Italy, which was the 10th most downloaded app of the week in all three countries.
- This was most likely because the Instagram social network is not yet available in the European Union, which contributed to the confusion.
- On Android, there is also a similar scenario. Themes now have more than 1 million downloads.
- Because of all this, the business app has had to put “not related to Instagram” messages on its website and App Store listing.
Different companies with the same name
Scenarios involving multiple companies sharing brand names are nothing new. There are many companies that share the same name all over the world. There is even another startup called Thread, which is a UK-based shopping platform.
So the Threads issue (a Slack alternative) is not a new phenomenon, especially when we consider that Instagram had a companion app called Threads, launched in 2019 and shut down two years later.
Threading is a strong word and an original term in the internet. Using threads – across platforms – is the best way to stay connected to your network or business. It is therefore not surprising that Meta chose a strong brand to represent their vision of building a town square.
Russo Kazei, co-founder and CEO of Thread, told TechCrunch
The future of threads
It is important to note that visitors and downloads that themes get due to confusion are unlikely to translate into new business, as frustrated users will quickly realize that it wasn’t what they were looking for. However, the profile boost received by the startup can be seen as great free publicity.
However, in the future, if Instagram Thread gains more popularity, companies will likely have to incorporate it into their social media strategy. This could also confuse potential customers of the Slack alternative, as companies would have to operate two completely separate communication platforms under the same name.
A lesser known thread confirmed to TechCrunch that it owns the trademark to its name, but declined to answer other questions on the matter, including whether it plans to take any action against Instagram or parent company Meta.
