WWith nine stages at altitude, the Tour of Spain will be contested again in the mountains in 2024, in its 79th edition, which, like the Tour of France, will end with an individual time trial in Madrid, on September 8th.
The Vuelta, the route of which was shown on Tuesday in Madrid, will start on August 17 in Lisbon, which already hosted the start in 1997, with a 12-kilometre time trial.
After three stages in Portugal, the peloton will take to the skies over Spain from day four onwards, reaching a total of nine summits and 13 mountain or mid-mountain stages. “If there is one thing that defines the course of 2024, it is its solidity,” confirms Vuelta director Javier Guillén, who expects a track that includes “kilometres and kilometers of stages where the road points up.”
For runners, the 2024 edition looks like a nightmare. The ninth stage, between Motril and Granada, for example, promises to be very difficult, with the climb of Alto del Porcci and the double ascent of Alto de Hazalanas, which includes sections with a gradient of 20%.
