GO Porto Municipal Corporation concluded 2023 with 60 completed projects, 25 in progress and 110 city rehabilitation projects, with a total investment of approximately €24.3 million. From the streets to major businesses, the company maintains its premise of continuing to “grow the city in all its parishes”.
With a total of 135 interventions on hand, 25 ongoing and a further 110 in the project implementation phase, GO Porto's area of activity across the city is more comprehensive than ever before. From the redevelopment of schools, health centers and cultural buildings, to comprehensive street improvements, including new construction of sports equipment, these projects cover the entire city of Porto geographically, with a particular focus on Ramalde, Campanha, Bonfim, Massarelos, Cedovita and Paranhos.
Among the 60 works completed and delivered to the city in 2023 is the long-awaited historic Alexander Herculano High School. After more than a year of in-depth intervention and modernization of its infrastructure, the high school opened its doors at the same time as the Escola Básica do Falcão, which was also renovated. Within the scope of education, it is worth noting the start of the rehabilitation of EB dos Correios, which will be completed before the start of the new academic year, with a municipal investment of 1.4 million euros.
Among the 64 projects that started last year was the construction of the Alameda de Cartes Park. Campanha thus obtains a green lung of 40 thousand square metres, in an intervention that corresponds to a municipal investment of about 2.2 million euros.
Sports remain the focus of attention of the municipal executive authority, with the launch of the second phase of the Ramaldi Sports Park project last June, which includes new sports infrastructure and administrative support. This final phase represents an investment of approximately 4.9 million euros.
In the scope of mobility, in addition to the continuation of the Rua Direita programme, which began in 2018, the highlight of 2023 is the completion of the new connection between Rua Frederico Ozanam and Avenida Sidónio Pais, in Ramalde, allowing the completion of one of the exits of the Rotunda do Bessa, which was About to open. It is also worth highlighting the beginning of the construction of a new street connecting Rua das Andrésas to Avenida Vasco da Gama, also in Ramalde. In a municipal investment totaling 1.3 million euros, this includes the completion of a subsection that has not been completed since 1990.
The 2023 portfolio also highlights the transformation of the former Porto industrial slaughterhouse, based on a private investment of around €40 million. This intervention foresees the complete reconversion of the complex, while preserving its historical memory and architectural nature. Of the 20,000 square meters available for construction, 7,885 square meters will be under municipal management.
“Renewal of the city”
With a municipal budget of €42.9 million for 2024, GO Porto has several long-awaited projects across the city that will finally see the light of day. In the introduction, the rehabilitation of the Public Library of the Municipality of Porto will be put to public tender in the first quarter of 2024, with an investment of approximately €26 million and an intervention period of three years.
The CACE Museum and Casa Tait will also undergo renovation works in 2024. The CACE Museum is still in the design phase, represents a municipal investment of around €4.3 million, and is not expected to start before the last quarter of the year. Casa Tait has a start date set for this summer and a global investment of $1.2 million.
In the field of education, with the completion of the works on the EB dos Correios, the rehabilitation of the EB in Agra do Miles, already for the first quarter of this year, and the EB da Ponte, scheduled to start after the end of the academic year, will follow, representing a global investment of 1.2 million euros per who are they.
Also in 2024, Campanha will see the birth of the new Municipal Stadium, between Justino Teixeira Street and the municipal swimming pools. With a total area of 17 thousand square meters and investments of 4.6 million euros, the project is scheduled to start in the second half of 2024 and continue for an estimated period of one and a half years.
The green spaces of the city are unforgettable, and the rehabilitation of Praça da Corujeira is a commitment of this executive authority. The public tender is expected to be launched in the fall of 2024, with an investment estimated at approximately 6.3 million euros.
Intervention will also take place in the historic Praça da República Park, as part of the municipality's strategy in the field of environment and green spaces. The project aims to make this symbolic square more attractive, accessible and functional for the local community, as well as for visitors, with an investment of 1.6 million euros.
Between ongoing projects and completed streets, the Rua Direta program is already halfway there. The program, launched in 2018, aims to rehabilitate the city's impressive network of public spaces that have received no intervention for decades.
After the first phase of selecting the team of designers, through an international public competition, the first contract began on Rua de Vila Nova in September 2020.
Three years later, the municipal program has already been completed on 12 streets, including the renewal of Silva Porto and Via Sacra, with 31 in progress and six in competition.
For 2024, 43 additional interventions are planned to be launched on the city streets, with a particular focus on the parishes of Ramalde, Paranhos and Campanha.
