oh British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Friday that American Bully XL dogs would be banned in the country by the end of the year after several attacks by the animals became known, Reuters reported.
“It is clear that this dog is a danger to our communities. I have ordered an urgent task to define and ban this breed so that we can put an end to these violent attacks and keep people safe,” Sunak said in a post on the community. Network X (formerly Twitter).
When announcing the plan, the Prime Minister declared that he “shares the nation’s horror” following the violent attacks by these dogs, which he deemed “bad training”.
“This is a pattern of behavior and it cannot continue,” he said in a video.

The announcement comes less than a week after one of the animals attacked an 11-year-old girl as she walked down the street in Birmingham. On Thursday, one person died after being attacked by two dogs of this breed in Stonal.
Campaign group Bully Watch, cited by Reuters, called for the sale and breeding of these dogs to be banned because the breed accounted for more than half of fatal attacks in the UK last year.
American Bully XLs were originally bred from American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers and first appeared in the country “around 2014 or 2015,” and the number has grown rapidly in recent years.
However, many British animal welfare bodies, including the RSPCA, have said banning specific dog breeds is not the answer.
In a joint statement, the associations blamed “irresponsible breeding and ownership”, revealing that the government should focus on “regulating regulations and promoting responsible ownership and training”.
