(Reuters) – Britain’s Department of Transportation on Saturday denied that the government was considering issuing temporary visas to EU workers to ease the crisis at airports.
The Telegraph newspaper reported on Saturday that British Transport Minister Grant Shops was considering granting temporary visas to EU workers in an effort to alleviate the staff crisis at airports.
A ministry spokesman said this was completely false.
Plans are under way to issue temporary visas to luggage handlers and Czech workers, as well as to fruit pickers, musicians and religious figures, the report said.
Last week, airports across Europe were unable to cope with the demand, especially at UK airports, as part-time school holidays coincided with the Platinum Jubilee holiday weekend.
The UK withdrew from the European Union in January 2020.
