Gustavo Petro’s trip, at the invitation of Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, will deal with issues on the bilateral agenda between Colombia and Portugal, as well as matters relating to current international affairs.
The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, will be in Portugal on Saturday and Sunday, on a working visit, at the invitation of the Portuguese Head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
According to a note posted on Saturday on the official website of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, “President Gustavo Petro’s visit to Portugal is part of a common perspective to deepen the excellent relations between the two countries.”
“On Sunday, May 7, a meeting between the two heads of state will take place at the National Palace in Belém, during which issues on the bilateral agenda between Colombia and Portugal will be discussed and developed, as well as matters relating to current international affairs,” reads the same note.
Today in London, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza attends the coronation of the King of the United Kingdom, Carlos III, after which he returns to Lisbon.
According to the memorandum issued by the Presidency of the Republic, the Portuguese head of state “will hold tonight a dinner in honor of President Gustavo Petro at the Cidadela Palace in Cascais.”
Gustavo Petro, an economist, ex-combatant and ex-senator who has risen to prominence in Colombia’s leftist opposition, was elected president in June last year and took office in August.
In March this year, the presidents of Portugal and Colombia attended the 28th Ibero-American Summit in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which was also attended by Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said that one of the bilateral meetings he held on the sidelines of the summit was with the President of Colombia and pushed at that time the possibility of Gustavo Petro visiting Portugal, “It is not necessarily a matter of state policy.”
