For his peers and for those who live a difficult life with poetry, Manuel Gusmão, who died on Thursday in Lisbon, is a name that attracts public acclaim, justified by a critical reception that recognizes his poetic work as one of the most important contemporary Portuguese poetry. This was not the only area in which his work became prominent: he was also an important essayist (his reading of many Portuguese authors has become indispensable for critics, scholars and literary historians); A distinguished professor of literature at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lisbon, who played an essential role in his department; Member of the Central Committee and intellectual sector of the Communist Party, who, even in this capacity, enjoyed widespread, non-partisan recognition.
