Fate brought the Moreira family and the Santos family together again. After their parents were teammates at Boavista and Gil Vicente, Diego Moreira and Pedro Santos joined Benfica and this afternoon, Sporting was killed in the youth league quarter-finals.
But let’s go by the parts.
Diego Moreira, 17, is the son of German Moreira, a former international player with Portugal’s youth teams. The winger was born in Liege, when his father played for Standard, and he made his first steps in the biggest club in the city. He later moved to Lierse before moving to Benfica in 2020.
Young talents are exploding in this edition of the Youth League. Diego Moreira shows an impressive series of goals – he scored four goals in the competition – and he is a left-handed player who loves to play in the left lane, and has many technical resources that allow him to be very strong in one goal. – Single player and high quality – Takes three passes to the goal in the Youth League.
In turn, Pedro Santos is also the son of a former footballer: Pedro Santos, who has worked in several national football teams such as Firenze, Arauca, Boavista, Gil Vicente, Penafel, Naval and Beira Mar. Two years older than Diego, the Reds spotted the winger at FiĆ£es, a club like him, between 2012 and 2016. Since then, he has gone through various phases of training at Seixal until settling into the Under-23 side, which he has played the most at this age.
Despite only playing for the Under-19 team in the youth league, Pedro Santos has scored four goals in eight youth league matches. He displays the qualities of a vertical winger, fast, intelligent and of good technical ability – the 2-0 match against Sporting is symptomatic.
Fate brought them together at Benfica as it had with their parents in the past. German Moreira and Pedro Santos, the parents of the two youngsters, were in Gil Vicente, the team that then won their second Spanish league, in the 1998/99 season. Later, they shared the Bessa dressing room in the 2000/01 season, a historic year for Boavista, in which they became national champions.
