We’ve been tracking the progress of updating Google’s Gmail interface since February, and as promised, the company claims it’s now available to all Gmail users. This improvement brings Meet, Chat, and Spaces together as part of the overall experience and also includes elements from Google’s Material Design 3.
The improvements may not stop there because this year we will be able to see many improvements in Gmail for tablet users, better emoji support and more accessibility features, among many other updates the company has flagged.
If you use Gmail for work, this new interface may already be implemented in your account. For those who can’t stand these kinds of changes, you can opt out and go back to the old look, at least for now. If you don’t have chat enabled, you may already have the new look, but only in Gmail view by default, and if you don’t use some or none of these apps, you can disable or enable them in the quick settings menu.
If you want to go back, it’s very easy to follow Google’s instructions:
- In the upper-right corner, click Settings.
- Under Quick Settings, tap Return to original Gmail view.
- In the new window, click Reload.
This new interface has moved the Mail, Meet, Spaces, and Chat buttons to the top left menu, instead of showing multiple conversations from each in a single list. These buttons can still be easily accessed without everything on the screen at once, and you can quickly jump to a conversation in whatever section you’re in, as a menu will be displayed when you hover over that icon.
The changes are part of Google’s comprehensive new approach to its Workspace package (including Documents, Sheets, etc.), which should provide a more standardized style and new AI-powered features like the just-released Gmail search improvements. Also announced.
