The James Webb Telescope has discovered the oldest and most distant black hole ever

Because it is invisible, the black hole's mass was detected thanks to the light emitted by the absorption of the galaxy. This light allowed astrophysicists to observe the plume containing the black hole at its center in 2016.

GN-z11 is a galaxy 100 times smaller than the Milky Way, but its mass is bound to hinder its evolution. When black holes consume gas excessively, they push the gas away like a “wind” and, as a result, can halt the star formation process and slowly kill the galaxy.

How are black holes formed?

Supermassive black holes arise from the pressure of the remains of dead stars, resulting in a black hole that can be nearly a hundred times the mass of the Sun.

If it follows its expected growth, the newly identified black hole would need billions of years to reach the observed dimensions.

However, at the time of its formation, the universe had not yet reached the billion-year mark. This fact has led researchers to question current mathematical models.
