Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was hospitalized on Saturday, but is in “good condition,” his office announced.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, without elaborating, stated that “Netanyahu was transferred to the Sheba Medical Center, and is in good condition and is undergoing a medical examination.”
Sheba Medical Center is the largest hospital in Israel and is located in the city of Ramat Gan near Tel Aviv.
The 73-year-old prime minister was taken to hospital from his home in Caesarea, after being warned by those close to him that he was not feeling well, Israeli media reported.
His personal physician, Zvi Berkowitz, told Channel 12 television that the prime minister’s condition was “good and stable”.
The prime minister reportedly lost consciousness at home, hitting his head when he fell, but arrived at the hospital fully conscious and walked without assistance, according to Israeli media, citing medical sources.
His son, Avner Netanyahu, is apparently in the hospital, and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, is on the way.
In October, Netanyahu was hospitalized at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center after he fell unwell while praying in a synagogue.
He was released from the hospital the next morning after he underwent tests and spent the night under observation.
Netanyahu, leader of the right-wing Likud party, is Israel’s longest-serving prime minister – 15 years.
And she, along with her religious and ultra-nationalist allies, won the elections last November, after spending several periods in power: 1996-1999 and 2009-2021.
Since the start of his second term in 2009, Netanyahu has not formally appointed an interim prime minister.
In the past, when he traveled abroad or had short scheduled medical interventions, he appointed a confidant minister to replace him temporarily.
