The Escola Superior de Saúde, of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC), celebrates its fiftieth anniversary on Tuesday, May 16, with the participation of former and current students, teachers and staff.
“May 16th will be filled with a huge program of memoirs, stories and many reminiscences about key moments of one of the most prestigious institutions in the field of health. Throughout the day, the heroes of the Escola Superior de Saúde’s 50-year existence will be given a voice,” IPVC says in a statement.
Escola Superior de Saúde officially opened its doors in January 1974, with a class of 29 students for the nursing assistant course. Half a century ago, he tells in his pages about “growing in a positive way, re-establishing and transforming himself to respond better to social, economic, political and professional changes, and expanding his training offer to include other fields, to respond to social needs, while qualifying the teaching staff and improving and expanding its facilities and specifically the laboratories”, As the director of ESS-IPVC says.

The 50th anniversary of the Escola Superior de Saúde is celebrated throughout the year, with a scientific, cultural and entertainment program dedicated to students who have passed and are still in school, teachers, faculty, health professionals and institutions with which the ESS-IPVC protocols established over the past half century. But the official ceremonies will take place next Tuesday.
After a musical moment at the Escola Profissional Artística do Alto Minho | ARTEAM, at 9:30 a.m. Memorial Day features interventions by ESS Director, President of IPVC, Carlos Rodriguez, Mayor of Viana do Castelo, Luis Nobre, and President of ESS-IPVC Student Association, Rafaela Silva.
This is followed by the signing of a cooperation protocol between the Escola Superior de Saúde and the municipality of Viana do Castelo, which “aims to create a collaborative commitment in the implementation of actions in the field of health promotion, according to a health model, optimizing institutional resources and promoting health gains for the population”.
The protocol also focuses on developing tools aimed at contributing to strategic health planning and the development of health promotion policy in the municipality. Carry out diagnoses at the local level, showing the health status of the population in a systematic, systematic, participatory and regionally limited way, and collaborate in identifying needs for human resource training and in establishing and implementing responses, both within the scope of programs or procedures underway or to be developed, or in connection with supporting the development of relevant internships Systematic and/or professional nature, in the field of health promotion, with a particular focus on mental health, are further purposes of the Convention.
Finally, the protocol aims to support the development of research projects and the dissemination of their results, centered around the needs of the population, in the field of promoting health, quality of life and well-being.
At the conclusion of the morning programme, the fiftieth anniversary will feature a panel discussion entitled “Nurse training and professional identity”, with interventions by José Amendoera, Professor at the ESS – Polytechnic Institute of Santarem and Researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Health, and Noémia Lopes, Sociologist, Professor at the Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz and Researcher at CIES-ISCTE | Sociology research and studies center. Responsibility for moderation will be assumed by journalist Julio Magalhaes.
After the lunch break, the festivities continue with a new musical moment from ARTEAM, at 2:30 pm and the presentation of the book celebrating the 50th anniversary of ESS-IPVC: “From the School of Nursing to the Superior School of Health – 50 years of tracks and projects”, presented by Lucilio Nunes, Professors At ESS – Polytechnic of Setúbal. The book features contributions from past directors and a current director of ESS-IPVC. Foreword by Gonzalo Marquez, Professor at the Higher School of Education, IPVC.
In conclusion, after giving appreciation / thanks to the staff for their years of service to the school, the tuna of ESS-IPVC, TUNESS will be presented, and the exhibition “50 years of history” will be visited.
Throughout the day of the celebration, guests will be able to watch excerpts from a video created with students, teachers, and past collaborators.
