The body of American mountaineer Hilary Nelson was found Wednesday in the Himalayas, two days after she disappeared on the slopes of Mount Manaslu in Nepal, according to campaign organizers.
“The search team that left by helicopter this morning has identified his body,” Jiban Ghimire of the Shangri-La Nepal tour, which organized the trip, told AFP.
The well-known climber, 49, was returning to base camp “after hitting the summit of Manaslu” with her American partner, Jim Morrison, when she “fallen into a deep rift,” according to the same source.
On the same day he disappeared, an avalanche occurred between Camps 3 and 4 in Manaslu, killing a Nepalese climber and injuring dozens of people, according to the state tourism department. She was the first confirmed casualty of the autumn climbing season in Nepal.
Hilary Nelson, in 2012, was the first woman to reach the summit of Everest, the world’s highest mountain, and neighboring Mount Lotse within 24 hours.
Nepal is home to eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world and foreign climbers who flock to climb its mountains are an important source of income for the country.
