One of the cities most infested by the Aedes aegypti mosquito in 2023, Estrela expects a similar situation next year and warns residents of the possibility of another dengue outbreak. With more than 900 cases reported since January, the municipality ranks seventh in the state in terms of confirmed cases of the disease. The rainy season in the coming months also represents a challenge that must be faced in the field of epidemiological surveillance.
Results of the Rapid Indicator Aedes aegypti (LIRAa) survey conducted during October are not yet available. But coordinator Carmen Hentschke indicates that the incidence must be greater than that recorded in August, when the indicators reached 8.2. According to her, most mosquito breeding sites are in homes.
“More samples containing larvae have been collected compared to the last survey. This is a warning that this situation is likely to get worse. Indicators show that above 3.9 is a serious infestation, and therefore Estrella is in a very worrying situation. Among the samples recovered are Collected, 571 samples were in homes and 51 were in vacant lots.
Over the year
Encantado’s Minister of Health, Caroline Cripa, said that preventive measures are being carried out throughout the year in the municipality, which has become the epicenter of the disease in the state. In March, 58% of rheumatoid arthritis cases were in the city.
“During this year, we have appointed endemic disease agents to cover the entire municipality. The agents make home visits for guidance and supervision, and every 15 days they inspect strategic points, such as cemeteries, tire repair shops and junkyards,” says Caroline. “At this stage, the insecticide is used every 60 days.
In recent days, the government has installed ovitraps, a system to control Aedes eggs. “The fight against dengue is important for all of us.”
In Lajedo
The concern extends to Lagido. With the arrival of summer, endemic agents intensify visits to homes and measures to combat the spread of mosquitoes, says Giuliana Demarchi, coordinator of epidemiological surveillance in Lagedo.
“Since October, we have had 43 suspected cases of dengue, of which 26 have already been eliminated. One of the confirmed cases was not infected here,” he added. “Another 16 cases are waiting for test confirmation or the ideal period for sample collection.” “There is no vaccine,” he added. Approved for public health use in Brazil against dengue fever.
