According to a survey by Instituto Ideia, 36% of respondents have not heard of tax reform, but would like to know more about it.
More than a third of Brazilians were unaware of the discussions about tax reform, which the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) has considered a priority.
This is what a survey conducted by the institute showed an idea Released on Saturday (6/17). According to the survey, 36% of the respondents have not heard of the topic, but would like to know more about it. Another 32% are aware of the topic while the remaining 32% said they are not interested in the topic.
According to the survey, although 76% of respondents know that there are taxes levied on products and services, only 36% seek information about applicable percentages. The survey also showed that 65% say they do not know the average rate of taxes paid in the country.
When asked about the reform that does not reduce the tax burden in the country, 44% of the respondents said they disagree, claiming that taxes are too high. Another 26% said they would agree to a proposal that did not necessarily lower current rates, as long as there were improvements in the quality of services.
The Instituto Ideia survey also asked respondents what they thought of the following statement: “Tax reform must take into account the reality of social and economic inequalities in Brazil and implement strategies that reduce these inequalities.” There were 56% who said they agreed, while only 6% disagreed. The others were indifferent or didn’t know how to respond.
Instituto Ideia research was presented during Brazil UK Foruman event promoted by Brazilian students in the UK to discuss economic, political and social issues.
The survey was conducted between May 15-16 and included 1,581 people over the age of 16 in Brazil’s five regions. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
