noDon’t like broccoli? A group of scientists from Al-Maarefa University in Saudi Arabia revealed that vitamin K can protect the elderly from diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.
“Vitamin K2 has shown a very promising effect in preventing behavioral, functional, biochemical, and histopathological changes related to aging in the aging brain,” the study’s lead author, Mohamed El-Sherbiny, wrote in a statement carried by the MetrĂ³poles portal.
The scientists analyzed the cognitive system performance and behavior of 17-month old mice. Half of the animals received supplementation with K-complex vitamins, and the mice that received the vitamins showed improvements in memory and learning ability. The risk of depression and anxiety also decreased.
By analyzing the animals’ brain tissue, the researchers also found an increase in tyrosine, an amino acid that helps maintain cognitive functions.
While they reinforce the need for further studies on this topic, the study authors assert that vitamin K “can be proposed as a promising approach to ameliorate age-related disorders and preserve cognitive functions in elderly individuals.”
Dementia is a general term used to refer to a group of diseases characterized by cognitive changes that may be associated with memory loss, language changes, and disorientation in time or space. For most people, there is no cure and also no specific way to prevent dementia.
It is reported that the World Health Organization estimates that there are 47.5 million people living with dementia worldwide, a number that could reach 75.6 million in 2030 and almost triple in 2050, to 135.5 million. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for about 60 to 70% of all cases of dementia.
