On World Malaria Day, prof Afternoon National – Amazon He spoke of the relationship between the increase in disease and illegal mining in Roraima. The study is the result of a partnership between the Federal University of Roraima, the Graduate Program in Biodiversity and Biotechnology (Rede Bionorte), Fiocruz, the Roraima Health Department and the Ministry of Health. The respondent was biochemist pharmacist and first author of the article, Jacqueline de Aguiar Barros. She is a PhD student in biodiversity and biotechnology at the Bionorte Network (UFRR) and a staff member of the Malaria Nucleus of the Ministry of Health in Roraima.
She explained that the growth in the number of malaria cases in the state is linked to two factors: the migration of Venezuelans and the significant increase in illegal mining in the Yanomami’s indigenous region.
According to the researcher, there is also the aggravating factor that prospectors do not obtain the correct treatment for malaria, which masks the symptoms and does not interrupt the disease transmission cycle. Jacqueline Barros believes the study can guide malaria eradication strategies in the region, pointing to actions in various business areas, not just in health.
