Spotify is rolling out an AI feature called “DJ” to premium customers in the UK and Ireland. The feature is aimed at music discovery and plays music with English commentary powered by artificial intelligence. In many ways, using an AI DJ is like listening to a radio DJ.
The company first rolled out the feature to premium subscribers in the US and Canada in February. This feature is powered by OpenAI’s technology and is still in beta, so there may be some bugs.
After the feature was introduced, the company noticed that Gen Z loved the new DJ feature, representing 87% of DJ users. Additionally, the company found that users of AI DJ on any given day spend 25% of their listening time with the feature.
Spotify said the DJ’s voice was modeled after Xavier “X” Jernigan, the company’s head of cultural partnerships. For example, it noted that users who tune into the feature will hear about Arlo Parks releasing his new album “My Soft Machine” by the end of the month. Eventually Spotify could use this feature as a new revenue stream to promote new releases on the platform.
During the feature launch at Spotify’s Stream On event, the company said AI DJ is powered by 2022 acquisition Sonatic in addition to OpenAI technology.
The DJ automatically plays tracks, but users can tap the AI DJ button to change moods or genres. Like any AI-assisted technology, the feature learns more about your preferences the more you ask.
The AI DJ feature is available on iOS and Android. Tap on the DJ card to access it through the music feed.
