The battle promises to light up the last day, especially for men.
Sporting lead the athletics clubs, after the first round, in Viseu by one point more than Benfica in the men’s, and especially in the women’s, with 21 points more than the Reds.
On the track at the Estádio do Fontelo, Sporting and Benfica shared the victories in 22 of the 23 races on the first day, with the exception of Mariana Machado, who gave Sporting de Braga the win in the women’s 5000m.
In the men’s race, Sporting started the winning streak with Emmanuel Essimi’s victory in the 100m, but Benfica won through Isaac Nadir in the 1500m.
The green and white club won again through Joao Coelho, in the 400m race, while Benfica won the height, where Gerson Balde jumped 7.90m in the final jump, beating Sporting’s Pedro Pires who was ahead by 7.70m.
In the 5000m, another victory for Leonin was achieved through Thiago Ramos.
In the men’s 4x100m race, Benfica won, while in the women’s race, the green and white team triumphed with a time of 44.45 seconds, a new club record, achieved by athletes Beatriz Andrade, Patricia Rodrigues, Lourdes Oliveira and Lauren Pazulo.
The 5.00m was decided by the sprint, with Ruben Amaral beating Duarte Gomes to eight points for Sporting, while Francisco Belo scored the most points for Benfica in the shot put.
In the pole vault, he beat Sporting’s Carlos Petra, and the Reds’ day ended with Leandro Ramos’ victory in the javelin.
In the women’s category, Sporting began to dominate with victories by Pazuolo in the 100m, in the hammer throw where she did not give Denmark’s Katrin Jacobsen any chance to compete, and in the long jump for Evelis Vega.
In the 400m race, Katia Azevedo won, followed by another Leonine win in the case of Hawi Abera in the 1500m race.
One of the afternoon’s surprises was Ana Leite’s victory in the high jump, with the Benfica player clearing the 1.77m bar, but Sporting ended up extending their lead at the front with Liliana Ka asserting her advantage and winning the discus throw.
The Reds will go on to reach eight more points with Vitoria Oliveira leading the 3,000m march, with Carolina Costa minimising the damage and adding seven points in second.
