Fees are a great source of income. However, there are countries that have “abandoned” this source of revenue, making many transportation methods freely available. Spain is one such example and will not go ahead with tolls in 2024.
The government withdraws its proposal regarding paying traffic fees...
Spain's highways will remain free in 2024. According to El Pais, the European Commission has accepted a proposal from the Spanish government to remove the idea of introducing toll payments in 2024 on previously free highways from the recovery plan.
The newspaper reported, citing CNN Portuguese, that the community's executive director spent several months evaluating the measure before making this decision. It is not a peaceful issue, because the measure is linked to the payment of the sixth tranche of promised European funds, in exchange for compliance with the reforms in the recovery plan, for which Spain will receive 8,000 million euros.
It must be remembered that the Spanish government has committed to creating a “payment mechanism for using state roads”, which will come into effect from 2024, according to the “polluter pays” principle, as stated in the original document sent to Brussels in April 2021.
This proposal met with strong opposition, especially in the recent campaign for the general elections on July 23.
