Simone Tebet, 52, a senator since 2015 and the only candidate in the presidential elections, is the new face of the Brazilian “third way”, after the resignation of the former governor of Sao state was announced, Monday. Paulo, Joao Doria.
With Doria’s departure, it is expected that the senator will be able to attract more center-right parties (such as PSDB, Doria’s party) to support them in the elections, which, so far, are highly polarized between the current Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, and former President Lula da Silva.
Former judge and former justice minister Sergio Moro announced on the last day of March that he will not be a candidate for the Brazilian presidency, and his party, União Brasil, has already submitted Luciano Pivare, with only 1% of voting intentions in the past conducted by CNN/RealTime Big Data.
Although Simon Tabet scores just 2% in the polls, the campaign’s expectations are that with the new support announced, that number will rise significantly.
“My biggest job is to make peace with the people. He talks to the people. He solves everyone’s problem. That’s why I’m ready to be on the side of these public men from other parties who will come and say that Brazil has a way,” Simon Tibet said on Wednesday during a press conference. It was reported by local newspapers.
At the same press conference, Tibet announced that he had no doubts that he would still have the support of the PSD, Joao Doria.
“I have no doubt that, next week, we will be with those who have always been our first allies: the good men and women of PSDB,” he said, quoted on the G1 portal.
The candidate also called for the female vote, saying that “a successful woman, a woman who empowers herself, who has a leadership role, is another woman who empowers.”
In a note published on Tuesday evening by the President of the National Executive Committee for Citizenship, Roberto Freire, according to Agência Brasil, the party expected that this nomination would preserve democracy “in its entirety” and ensure the free exercise of institutions.
“With Simone Tebet, MDB, PSDB and Cidadania have taken a concrete step towards preserving democracy through a joint programme: Brazil’s Design for the Twenty-first Century (…). Liberals, environmentalists, the new left and all those who consider freedoms and democracy as values are expected to join in. International “.
According to recent polls, Lula has 40% of voting intentions, Bolsonaro has 32% and Ciro Gomez has 9%.
