oh The Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Anglican Church, said the United Kingdom would undermine its global standing if it approved a plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, which began debate in the country's upper house of parliament this Monday.
Justin Welby, as quoted by the Associated Press, said, “A selective approach to international law undermines our global standing.
Welby felt that British politicians were trying to “outsource moral and legal responsibility to asylum seekers and refugees”.
“We, as a nation, can do better than this proposal,” he said, referring to a British government bill to send illegal immigrants to the UK across the English Channel to Rwanda.
It is a proposal by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government as part of a plan to combat the influx of illegal immigrants into the UK, mostly via the English Channel, in small boats. In November, Britain's Supreme Court ruled Rwanda was not a safe country for refugees and ruled the program illegal.
Now, the House of Lords is debating proposed legislation that aims to address the Supreme Court's objections. There, it may be subject to new amendment proposals and objections, which are then returned to the public forum for notification.
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), even in its latest version, the proposed law is “not compatible” with international law because it “does not meet the legal standards required for the transfer of asylum seekers”.
A plan to deport migrants from the United Kingdom to Rwanda, announced by Boris Johnson's government in April 2022, was never implemented.
The first flight was blocked at the last minute by a European court ruling, and British courts later declared the project illegal.
In an attempt to save the project, the government signed a new agreement with Rwanda, backed by this new proposed law, which defines Rwanda as a safe third country and prevents migrants from being sent back to their home countries.
In 2023, around 30,000 migrants crossed the English Channel illegally in small boats.
Five migrants died over the weekend trying to reach a capsized boat in French waters.
