The Portuguese achieved the best ever national mark in the ten kilometer race
Samuel Barata smashed Portugal’s best-ever 10km record on Sunday, running in Brasov in 27.45 minutes, breaking the record that had stood for 38 years, since 1985, and was held by Fernando Mamede (28.11).
The 30-year-old Benfica athlete was able to finish seventh in the Romanian race and entered the top three in Europe for the year in the distance, behind German Amanal Petros (27.32) and Frenchman Jimmy Grisier (27.33). Moreover, with this mark, Samuel Baratta became part of the top 10 Europeans in the distance, in eighth place, with names like Swiss Julian Wanders (27.13) or Mo Farah (27.44) ahead of him.
Note that the third place in this competition was Edward Zakayo, the athlete from Benfica, with 27.14.
Women’s world record
Also in Brasov, Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngic won the 10 km race and set a world record in the women’s only race. With 29.24, the 22-year-old athlete also achieved the second-best mark in history at any event, surpassed only by Yalmziref Yehoalav’s 29.14.
