It’s only been a few hours since Apple started making iOS 16 available to users, with many new features, including a focus on the company’s original browser.
Safari was one of those that got some new features, and one of the most awaited was the arrival of AVIF support. This image format was launched as a way to improve uploading of online content, similar to what is found in JPEG, PNG, GIF, and others.
This format is developed by the Alliance for Open Media, a group that includes names such as Amazon, Apple, ARM, Cisco, Facebook, Google, Huawei, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, Nvidia, Samsung and Tencent.
The purpose of the format was to improve performance when loading web pages, while reducing the bandwidth required for the task of downloading images. Chrome was among the first to receive support for AVIF images, with version 85, followed by 97 on Android. Firefox has since released version 93 this year.
Now, Safari also provides support for them, thus optimizing the loaded contents even more.
Safari 16.0 arrives with support for these images, and it is also expected to receive support in the future on macOS Ventura and iPadOS. All users need is to update to the latest version of iOS to receive the news there.
