Russia’s Gazprom suspended its gas shipments to Eni scheduled for Saturday, citing the impossibility of transporting it through Austria, the Italian company announced.
Eni said in a statement, “Gazprom informed us that it could not confirm the delivery of the quantities ordered for this day, citing the impossibility of transporting gas through Austria.”
As a result, the Italian giant added, citing AFP, that “the flow of Russian gas to Eni through the Tarvisio entry point will be zero” during the day.
Most of the Russian gas delivered to Italy passes through Ukraine through the TAG pipeline to Tarvisio, in the north of the country, on the border with Austria.
According to an Eni spokesperson quoted by Italian news agency AGI, Gazprom said it was unable to comply with the rules necessary to obtain a gas distribution service in Austria.
“We are working to verify with Gazprom whether it is possible to reactivate flows to Italy,” the spokesman said.
Russian gas exports to Europe have fallen steadily since sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine began on February 24 this year.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Eni announced in early March that it would sell its 50% stake in the Blue Stream pipeline, which it also controls with Russian giant Gazprom.
