In reference to World Kidney Day, which is celebrated on Thursday (14), the Hospital Regional do Baixo Amazonas Dr. Waldemar Pena (HRBA) organizes the first multidisciplinary symposium on kidney health. The event will take place in a private university hall, in Rua Rosa Vermelha, in the Aeroporto Velho neighborhood, in Santarém, west of Pará.
This year's theme is “Kidney Health: Creatinine Testing for Everyone,” focusing on the importance of creatinine testing in early detection of kidney problems.
The event aims to bring together health professionals from primary care in Santarém and other municipalities in the Western Region, together with academics in the field of health.
With a population of 1.4 million spread over 29 municipalities in the region, the HRBA is an important unit of kidney health. Six speakers specialized in this topic will address different aspects related to kidney health.
Nephrologist José Campos, MD, will talk about “The Approach to the Pre-Kidney Patient,” while Nephrologist Ivaned Pantoja, MD, will talk about “Principles of Treating Chronic Kidney Disease in Primary Care.”
Furthermore, the event will witness the participation of nephrology nurse Tiago Fernandez, pharmacist Kimila Colares, nutritionist Lidian Garcia, and psychologist Adria Oliveira, who will share their knowledge about different aspects of treatment and prevention of kidney failure.
Kidney dialysis and organ transplantation
HRBA currently provides dialysis services to 197 users, as well as peritoneal dialysis to 22 patients undergoing treatment at home, under the supervision of the institution's specialists. The Center for Renal Replacement Therapy (CRTS) has a team of 86 specialists dedicated to the care and monitoring of these patients.
Last year, HRBA performed an impressive 30,400 dialysis sessions, ensuring an essential service for those facing challenges with kidney function.
Moreover, the Foundation is a reference in the field of kidney transplantation, having performed 106 operations since 2016. Last year alone, 26 successful kidney transplantations were performed, providing a new lease of life for patients with kidney failure.
The first multidisciplinary symposium on kidney health represents another important step in the fight against kidney failure in the western region of Pará, strengthening the efforts of HRBA and its collaborators in providing high-quality treatment and promoting awareness of the importance of kidney health.
