On Thursday night, the United States and the United Kingdom launched air strikes against Houthi rebel positions in Yemen, with support from Iran, in an escalation of tension in the Red Sea region.
These “raids” come in response to a series of rebel attacks in recent days that disrupted maritime traffic in the Red Sea.
An American official confirmed to Bloomberg that the attacks were carried out by American and British forces, and indicated that an official announcement would be made in the coming hours. The attack comes hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken finished a tour of the Middle East in which he not only addressed the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but also sought regional support for a more aggressive response against the Houthi rebels.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Thursday, allowed the participation of British military personnel in joint operations against the Houthi rebels.
Tensions increased in the region, and on Thursday, Iran arrested an oil tanker transporting crude oil from Iraq.
