Lawyers for the Hellenic Parliament in Greece issued a statement stating that she intends to resume her duties
Eva Kayli, a former MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament who was arrested five months ago as part of investigations into possible bribery from Qatar, is now preparing to return to work. The Belgian Public Prosecutor announced that Kylie was no longer under house arrest, prompting lawyers to announce in a statement Kylie’s intention to resume his duties in the European Parliament.
in a joint statementKayli’s lawyers, Sven Marie and Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, stated that “As of today, Eva Kayli is free to leave her place of residence and to exercise all her rights and obligations arising from her status as a Member of the European Parliament.”
The legal team stressed that Eva Kayli “is not intimidated by the ban on leaving Belgium” and that she “intends to return to Greece only after her trial,” noting that the evidence supporting her innocence is increasing.
However, despite this significant development, the restrictions still prevented Kylie from attending the plenary sessions of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, thus preventing her from fully performing her duties as an EU lawmaker. According to what Politico quoted their lawyers as saying, this restriction will soon be resolved.
The Greek MEP, who is also removed from the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group, is suspected of having mediated in favor of Qatar and Morocco for money, after it declared its innocence.
The Belgian authorities carried out their first raids and arrests on December 9, 2022, confiscating 1.5 million euros in banknotes. Qatar and Morocco deny any involvement in the case.
